Dressed for Winter

In my recent search for some nice fall dresses I realized how difficult they can be to find, especially if you're on a budget. These styles are easy ways to incorporate some more dressy looks into your fall wardrobe.

Sequins and Sparkles The right sequined dress looks classy, stylish, and bold. To accessorize, try to minimize shine and go for matte materials so the look isn't overwhelming.

Nasty Gal Ella Sequin Dress $78

To tone this look down a bit, go for a dress with embellishing on one part, instead of all over.

Velvet is a unique and elegant winter fabric that is very versatile. Don't be afraid to play around with some fun colors. If your lace dress is a solid color, try some patterned accessories, and tie it all together with a similar color theme.

Peplum is sophisticated and stylish. A simple, solid color peplum dress is great for statement jewelry and accessories. The dress can stand out on it's own, but wont over power other aspects of the outfit. Plus, the silhouette looks great on everyone!

Prints The right printed dress looks stylish, elegant, and interesting. The material on a formal printed dress is key: go for chiffon, or fabrics with a bit of shine (polyester often is), and avoid cotton. To keep the look from being too crazy, go simple on jewelry and accessories.
If it's too cold, wear a shorter dress with a pair of sheer tights.

Lace is classic and elegant. Sheer lace sleeves show a bit of skin, but still look winter appropriate. Make a metallic lace (silver, or gold-like the dress on the right) pop with jewelry of a similar tone.

Don't be afraid to dress your look down! These casual winter dresses are great for everyday wear.

And don't forget the power of layering! Any simple dress can be made more cold-weather-appropriate by a nice sweater.

A Hint of Fall

This is the most awkward time of the year for Texas weather. One day I'm pulling out all my fleece blankets and the next I'm turning on the AC. I put together this simple outfit as something versatile to wear through the morning with a sweater when it's a bit chilly and to stay cool in when it warms up in the afternoon.

I found this H&M safety pin top in Vancouver last year and immediately fell in love. It's understated edginess and relaxed shape create the perfect balance and make this shirt stylish and easy to wear. To add extra layers, a simple black sweater would work great!

My earrings are from Strut, I used them to tie the whole outfit together and bring in the different themes.

I absolutely adore these knit shorts. I found them on sale for $10 at Urban Outfitters and they are super cute and comfy. They are the perfect shorts for the weather between summer and fall in Texas: their sweater-like fabric makes them more fall appropriate while their length keeps you cool.

My moccasins are from one of my favorite stores, Nordstrom Rack. Their impressive shoe selection puts a regular Nordstom to shame: most of the shoes are marked down 60% off! These Minnetonka moccasins were originally $65, and I bought them at $24. And get this: these exact same boots are still carried in regular Nordstroms at full price. Last season? Nope.

Fall 2012 Inspiration

Ever need a little outfit inspiration?
Even if you've got all the key pieces for your fall wardrobe, it can be hard to find new ways to mix them up in a variety of different outfits. From the runways to the streets, the pages of catalogs to the pages of other blogs, here's some of my fall inspiration.

Washed out pink tones are a great transition color! They can be worn with fall styles but don't make you look like you're ready for the ice age.

Deep fall yellows and greens are a fall closet staple. They provide a splash of color that is bright, yet undoubtedly a fall hue.

Cobalt is one of the season's hottest colors. Work it into an outfit will a lot of light neutrals for a more subtly chic fall look.
