How to Wear Flare Leg Pants

Magazines everywhere continue to announce the end of skinny jeans, encouraging readers to try out some flare leg jeans, claiming that the look is coming back. But this trend isn't exactly making it to the streets, mostly because it's a hard look to pull off. Flare leg pants can easily make you look straight out of the 70's, which, for some, is a sought after look, but for others, maybe going to work or school, can be a little much. Also, flare leg pants can make your legs look large if they aren't worn right.  Follow just a few basic rules and you can bring this revolution, just waiting to happen, into action.

  1. Wear heels, the higher the better. This helps keep your figure looking slim. If you want to make the look as modern as possible, go for some simple, one color pumps. To add a more professional 70's touch to the outfit, go for some two or three toned pumps or ankle boots.
  2. Keep the top simple. Don't go for patterns or too many colors. A simple sweater or button down compliments the more professional look. Make sure the top is fitted and not too loose, as this can make you look like somewhat of a big triangle.
  3. Get a big, slouchy bag. This can help channel the outfit into whatever look you are going for. Big, slouchy bags go great with flare leg pants. Try to find something that includes one of the colors that already exists in your ensemble.
  4. Don't be afraid to break the rules. To play it safe, follow these rules. I would experiment with a 70's look for a job interview, but don't be afraid to try adding some funk to your look on the weekends or for a party. Don't limit yourself with these rules. Bottom line: HAVE FUN WITH IT!
For a professional flare-leg pant look, try a simple, neutral colored button down, neutral pumps, and a pair of flare or wide-leg slacks (if it's a friday, some dressy jeans could work, too). For a bag, try something neutral as well, to keep the color scheme going.

To take the look from day to night, shoes are the key. Casual boho boots are a great way to take this look to the streets. With a cozy vest and neutral color scheme, this boho day look can be modified for any weather. To take the look to night, try adding either a splash of color or sparkle. As you can see, for this ensemble, I used sparkles and kept the look darker. Dark wash jeans look more formal and are easier to use in a night look. Add in a leather bag for a slight edge and you are ready to go!
